Reasons to Document My Vessel
-
Commercial activities
-
Marine lenders usually require vessel documentation
-
US protections in international waters
-
Certificate of ownership supported by a detailed
abstract reflecting all ownership and lien transactions.
Required for Commercial Use or by Lender
A properly recorded "Preferred Vessel Mortgage" grants your
lender a first priority contractual lien position against your vessel.
However, such mortgage cannot become recorded or "perfected" unless the vessel is documented with the US Coast Guard. Accordingly,
most lenders will require the vessel to become documented when the
loan amount exceeds a certain amount, when the vessel exceeds a certain
size, or when the vessel is intended for offshore and commercial usage.
In such cases, you may have difficulty obtaining a loan if the vessel
does not otherwise qualify for documentation.
Alaska Has No Titling System
When documented, the vessel has a clearly defined ownership. Alaska
State registration does not reflect any liens or claims against a
vessel. In the case of an undocumented vessel, marine lenders must
look for other methods of securing the vessel as collateral for a
loan.
A documented vessel may still hold state registration if desired.
